Have you ever noticed that many people are psychologically afraid of the police although they have not committed any crime? Perhaps it’s the way law enforcement is being protrayed in the media or entertainment, or perhaps the fear is rooted in their upbringing when their parents always half-jokingly warn them to behave otherwise the police will arrest them. Whatever the cause may be, that is the kind of attitude that creates a barrier for law enforcement to build a trusting and cooperative relationship with the general public. The Ontario Police is taking an initiative to improve their relations with the general public by launching a new police complaint system.

Traditionally, a citizen is required to enter a police station to obtain a complaint application form. Once the form has been submitted, it is left in the hands of the police force to decide whether it is worthwhile to proceed with an investigation. Many citizens feel uncomfortable knowing that their complaint is left in the hands of law enforcement, which is why the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) have recently been launched as a third-party organization that is responsible for investigating complaints against any provincial, regional or municipal police officer in Ontario.

Any citizen wanting to file a complaint against a police officer is still required to step foot into a police station to attain an application form, but the completed form will be submitted directly to OIPRD for further evaluation. The Ontario Police receives approximately 800 types of complaints from the public, and through the new establishment of OIPRD, they are expected to receive approximately 1400 types of complaints. Among these complaints, the 3 most common categories of complaints are police misconduct, racial profiling, and abuse. Despite the increase in the number of complaints the Ontario Police is expected to receive, they are taking a proactive approach towards educating the general public regarding this new police complaint system in attempt to better understand their problems and to build a better connection with the public.

Visit https://www.oiprd.on.ca/cms/ for more details about the OIPRD.

Here is a police news story that is on the lighter side. An entire police force in Budaors, Hungary consisting of 15 officers have decided to resign from their position after winning over £10 million (equivalent to over CAD $16 million) in the lottery. The police force in Budaors is put in a desperate situation to assemble temporary replacements until more full-time police officers can be recruited.

Although this news story may seem quite entertaining, but what would you do if you were put in the situation as a police officer with a winning lottery ticket? If you know that you are financially stable, would you still be willing to risk your own life to serve and protect the city? It may be hard to imagine because people tend to do strange things when they win the lottery. We cannot judge the intentions of others, but it is always a good thing to reflect on the core values of your belief and to understand the true intentions of your own actions.

Police Ready has designed our own mini quiz that will help with your decision to become a police officer. Click here to try our free mini quiz.

Google Street View is finally made available to the Canadian public and the responses are phenomenal. You may have already experimented with Google Street View and like most users, you’re probably shocked at the high resolution image that you are seeing of your own house and your neighbourhood. Google Street View provide users with the ability to zoom, rotate, and pan through street-level images of Canadian cities.

Ever since its launch in Canada a few weeks earlier, this new Internet technology has raised some serious concerns for home security inspectors. The clarity of the images provide any user with Internet access to get a good look at your home and analyze your security installations. Although the images on Google Street View are not the most recent images of your neighbourhood, it does not provide home owners with a peace of mind knowing that people can be viewing their home on a computer screen without knowing their intentions.

However, the Ottawa Police does not believe Google Street View will be a concern for them. They have not received any concerns from the general public yet and on the other hand, they believe Google Street View can actually be used as a tool for police force to inspect an area prior to sending officers to an endangered location.

What are your opinions on Google Street View? Should it be a concern or not for law enforcement?

This October marks a special month for law enforcements in the Ontario and Manitoba provinces to alert citizens about safe driving.

A ban on cellphones and other hand-held devices will take effect for all Ontario drivers on October 26. This includes any sort of communication and entertainment devices. However, you will still be allowed to use your cellphone to make 911 emergency calls. This new law will not have any affect on emergency response personnel such as police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

During the month of October, RCMP across Manitoba will begin a one-month long traffic enforcement campaign that will specifically target drivers and passengers who are not wearing seatbelts. They will be making sure that all children are properly restrained using seatbelts inside the vehicles.

From the growing number of retiring baby boomers to the current recession, these are just some of the factors that have contributed to the RCMP’s hurdle in recruiting new cadets. As part of RCMP’s aggressive recruiting campaign, they are putting huge investments toward renovating the RCMP training academy and implementing some of the latest simulation technologies as part of their training facilities.

Eight computerized driving simulators will be installed which will help RCMP cadets to safely learn how to control a cruiser at high speed while dodging civilians and other road obstacles en route to an emergency location.

Other simulation technologies being installed at the RCMP academy include a role-playing interactive video simulator. This machine can simulate real-life scenarios to assess a cadet’s ability to quickly and accurately respond to various on-duty scenarios. In addition, an airmunition firing range will be established as part of the RCMP academy’s latest renovations.

The $1.2 billion price tags for these newly renovated facilities and latest technologies show that the RCMP is serious with their latest RCMP recruitment
campaign.

Police officers are not only professionally trained to handle gun and tasers, but they’re also professionally trained to use paintball guns – at least in Japan. The cops in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan has started implementing the use of paintball to help chase down fleeing criminals. The paint is designed to be hard to remove so the police force and the general public can easily identify a fleeing suspect. The paintball gun is also designed with a laser pointer installed to provide cops with a supported aim. The paintball guns are still undergoing development and the maximum shooting range of 50m still provides a challenge for the Japanese police officers.

Check out this YouTube video to see the paintball gun in action.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the use of Taser guns by law enforcements in Canada for the past several months. Recently, Taser International unveiled its new Taser X3 stun gun in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Unlike the older model, the new Taser gun can shock 3 people without reloading. This new gun uses cutting-edge technology to enhance its effectiveness and safety. However, this has created yet another wave of controversial opinions relating to the proper usage of Taser guns in Canada. A recent government inquiry found that Taser guns were responsible for 25 deaths including the that of Robert Dziekanski – a Polish immigrant who died after being stunned 5 times by RCMP Officers at Vancouver International Airport.
